The Ministry of Education has confirmed that laptops have been distributed to all Form One students, however “a small number” due for teachers, are still outstanding.

“All laptops have been handed over to students, but due to transportation problems some are still to be distributed to teachers. This should be done by Wednesday,” said a source at the ministry.

The Government fulfilled a campaign promise when they provided 3,000 Hewlett Packard (HP), HP425 laptops, complete with carrying cases, to successful students who sat the Secondary Entrance Examination (SEA) in 2010.

HP was awarded an $83 million contract to supply the fully loaded laptops.

Minister of Education, Dr Tim Gopeesingh confirmed that the laptops cost the Government approximately $4,000 each, but had a commercial value of approximately $15,000.

Features such as Microsoft XP professional 2010, and other microsoft applications have increased the worth of the laptops significantly. The laptops were outfitted with faster processing speeds, improved wireless capability, Bluetooth (wireless) connectivity, larger internal storage, faster hard drive speed, extended battery life, Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 and Learning Essentials 2.0 for Microsoft Office. The Minister explained that the Government received significant discounts from the suppliers of the additional software and accessories, which were installed in each laptop.

In addressing the tendering process for laptops for students who will be entering Form One in September 2011, iGovTT CEO Cleveland Thomas, in a Joint Select Committee (Group Two) of Parliament on February 12 stated, when the ministry was ready to begin accepting bids it should have a longer planning period than last year’s pilot project.

iGovTT, which procured the laptops and oversaw the project for the ministry, falls under the purview of the Ministry of Public Administration.
